Los Angeles police say a suspect who shot and wounded an officer during a running gun battle was himself shot and died at the scene.
Officer Norma Eisenman says the officer was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and released early Tuesday.
Eisenman says the suspect took off running while officers on patrol were dispersing a group of people hanging out late Monday in the Watts section of the city.
She says during a foot chase, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing. The officer returned fire and fatally shot the suspect.
Officials say a gun was recovered at the scene.
